A Monday at Halo Chantilly

Three rooms take turns.

Scroll moves the clock. Every figure is one person in the sample count, in the room where the timetable puts their class. The sun is where it is over Chantilly today.

  1. 4:55 a.m. Before sunrise

Five o’clock is a real class.

CrossFit703 starts at 5:00 a.m., Monday to Friday, in the green hall: the rig, two blocks of it, either side of an aisle that runs from the glass door to the clock. The lights are on before the sun is up.

  2. 6:45 a.m. The commute classes

    Forty-five minutes, then work.

Strength & Cardio is Halo’s PEAK (the board in the blue hall calls it TNT): a coach-led circuit round twelve numbered stations, “a fast-paced, 45-minute total body workout.” Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00, 6:45 and 7:30, while CrossFit has the green hall.

I get an intense, full-body workout in 45 minutes rather than slowly wandering around a gym on my own for 1.5 hours.

  3. 10:15 a.m. HYROX

Run a kilometre. Do a station. Eight times.

HYROX runs at Chantilly, on the turf: Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Half the class is always out on the run: the figures lapping the lots, out of the front door and round the building. The turf hall’s sensor counts only the half that’s inside.

  4. 2:00 p.m. The quiet window

    Every room is open.

From 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays no hall has a class; on Friday it runs to 4:30. The same rooms and the same equipment, and a handful of people. This is when the afternoon sun comes in through the blue hall’s end windows.

  5. 4:05 p.m. The handover

    The young athletes arrive.

Athletic Strength & Conditioning is Halo’s program for young and student athletes: speed, agility, power and confidence. On Mondays it starts at 4:00 on the turf, while the 3:30 HYROX class finishes. The smaller figures are them.

  6. 5:35 p.m. Monday evening

    Which room is quiet?

Strength & Cardio has the blue hall from 5:10, and CrossFit703’s 5:30 has the green one. The turf hall between them has no class until 6:10. At Chantilly the rooms take turns: no minute of the week has a class in all three.

    51 insidePEAK 26Turf 1CrossFit 24 sample

  7. 7:20 p.m. The last class

    Twelve stations, one direction.

The 7:15 Strength & Cardio is Monday’s last class, while CrossFit’s 6:30 finishes next door. The yellow discs on the blue hall’s floor number the stations, each with an arrow to the next.

The instruction is very intentional, and they really focus on making sure your form is correct, which makes such a difference.

  8. 10:00 p.m. After hours

The way in is the glass door.

After classes the storefront is locked. Members on the 24/7 tier unlock the glass door at the end of the green hall’s rig aisle from their phones and let themselves in. The counters keep counting, and only the rooms with someone in them are lit.

    3 insidePEAK 1Turf 0CrossFit 2 sample

The counters

One number for each room.

A small sensor high on each hall’s wall counts the people in that room, and nothing else. The three numbers at the top of this page are those counts, and the building’s total is their sum. Here they are sample data, because Halo has not installed one.

What they do not do

  • They keep no video. Each frame is processed on the device and discarded; only a number leaves the building.
  • They do not know names or faces, and cannot tell a member from a visitor.
  • They cannot say who came to class and who didn’t.
  • They do not follow anyone across the floor. A sensor knows how many people are in its room, not where they stand: the figures in the model are placed by the timetable.

From Google reviews of Halo

In members’ own words.

I get an intense, full-body workout in 45 minutes rather than slowly wandering around a gym on my own for 1.5 hours. Going to Halo has helped me to persevere through various significant life challenges in the last 3 years.

Ryan F.

I absolutely love the group workouts. The instruction is very intentional, and they really focus on making sure your form is correct, which makes such a difference. … Jordan and Dan are awesome — encouraging, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in helping you succeed.

Jaime M.

One of my favorite things about Halo is the community. Everyone is so friendly and I genuinely look forward to seeing the group I usually work out with in the mornings.
